There shouldn’t be anything unusual about the death of an elderly widow, until a man appears at her graveside, claiming to be her long-lost son. He’s entitled to shed all the tears he likes, but whether he’s entitled to her substantial fortune is another question. Meanwhile, the resolutely boring Sgt. Wield, whose personal life is thrown into turmoil by potential blackmail, comes busting out of the closet, much to the surprise of his colleagues. The focus on Wield in this novel in the Dalziel & Pascoe series, and the reactions of both Andy Dalziel and Peter Pascoe to the revelation of his sexuality (which may come as a surprise to readers familiar with both men), make for a very interesting read.
