Barry Maitland was born in Scotland in 1941 and moved to London with his family when he was young. He attributes his fascination with story structure and atmosphere to his background in architecture and urban design, which he studied and taught before becoming a full-time fiction writer. He is best known for his Brock and Kolla series, which takes place in London and features an unlikely male-female detective team. The first novel in this series, The Marx Sisters, was published in 1994 and short-listed for the UK Crime Writers’ Association John Creasey Award for best new fiction. The second novel, The Malcontenta, was joint winner of the Ned Kelly Award for best crime writing in 1995, and two other Brock and Kolla books have been shortlisted for the same award in other years. He currently lives in Australia.
