Coming Soon: Excerpts from Michael McDowell’s Journals

About a month ago I stumbled upon a series of journals kept by Michael McDowell, who wrote both the “Jack and Susan” trilogy and – under the name Nathan Aldyne – the four “Valentine and Lovelace” mysteries, set in and around Boston’s gay community, which we will be bringing out later this year. The journals cover the period from early 1985 through mid-1986, and while there are plenty of references to coke and porn (this was L.A. in the 1980s), they are primarily a chronicle of the incredible amount of work McDowell managed to put in a day. Over the next couple of weeks I’ll share the more interesting bits I came across, such as who McDowell would want to play Jack and Susan in a movie, and his ideal cast for Beetlejuice.

Many thanks to the Bowling Green University library, where the Michael McDowell papers are archived, for providing us with a copy of the journals.
