Felony of the Week: By Frequent Anguish, by S.F.X. Dean

I lost someone I cared about, this weekend, so I wanted to highlight an author who takes death seriously. SFX Dean is the obvious choice: He wrote some of the wittiest prose since Edmund Crispin hung up his novelist’s cleats, but his protagonist, Professor Neil Kelly, is a devout Catholic, and the series – unusually, for mystery fiction – treats murder as both a tragedy and a sin. There’s real meat to chew on here, but the delightfully clever dialogue makes it taste like a treat. By Frequent Anguish (No. 1 in the series) showcases Kelly’s obsession with the poet John Donne, so you can feel all highbrow ‘n stuff while reading it. This week only, at a special price.
