Those pesky Kindle files: A Guide to Downloading Kindle Ebooks

Getting your files to open in a Kindle, if you didn’t purchase them directly on the Kindle from Amazon, is not the most intuitive of processes, so here is a step-by-step guide (the short version of this is: you need to make sure to move the file into your Kindle “documents” folder before it will open).

There are two ways to get your Kindle files onto your Kindle: You may email them to your Kindle email, or transfer them via USB cable from your computer to your Kindle.

The email way:

1. Once you purchase a Kindle file from us, you will receive an email with a download link. Click on that link, and the file will download onto your computer (and appear wherever downloaded files typically appear on your computer).

2. Locate your send-to-Kindle email, if you don’t know it. You will find it on Amazon, under “Your Account” and then “Manage your content and devices” and then “Manage your Devices.”

3. Email the newly downloaded Felony book file to the Kindle email from the email address that you use for Amazon in general.

4. Wait 5 to 15 minutes for the files to sync. Your new file will show up on your home screen and your “documents” folder.

The USB cable way:

1. Once you purchase a Kindle file from us, you will receive an email with a download link. Click on that link, and the file will download onto your computer (and appear wherever downloaded files typically appear on your computer).

2. Connect your Kindle to your computer via USB cable (this is the same cable you use to charge your Kindle), and ignore any messages that may appear on your Kindle screen; you’re not yet working with the Kindle at this point.

3. Now look at your computer. Your Kindle device will appear in the same location as external USB drives usually appear. For Windows users, this is typically in the “Computer” or “My Computer” menu. For Mac users, the drive will appear on the desktop or the “Finder” window.

4. Open the Kindle drive on your computer. You will see several folders inside, one of which will be named “documents.” This is the folder you will move the downloaded file into.

5. Locate the downloaded file and copy it into the documents folder. You can generally copy files by clicking and dragging the file to the folder.

6. Safely eject your Kindle device from your computer and unplug the USB cable. Your content will appear on the Home screen.
