Sarah Rayne Interview: The Sound of History

Another hallmark in Sarah Rayne’s writing is the use of more than one time period in her novels, the sense of the past spilling a poison cargo into the present. She is particularly drawn to the early years of the 20th century, which is rather unusual these days, Victorian times being extremely popular a setting in mystery writing. We asked Sarah why she found that slice of history so compelling, and in the course of our conversation she told us about the inspiration for her novel Ghost Song.
