Thursday Quiz: Mystery Movies

We’re all about the Nathan Aldyne books this week, but that series, with its zippy dialogue and pitchers of martinis, is frequently likened to some of the great classic films. (No accident: author Michael McDowell – under his real name – was a successful screenwriter, best known for the screenplay of “Beetlejuice.”) So it seemed appropriate that our Thursday Quiz focus on some of those classic films. How well do you know your Mystery Movies?

    1. We all know and love The Maltese Falcon, but it wasn’t the first Dashiell Hammet work to be adapted for the movies. What was?
    2. William Powell and Myrna Loy memorably played Nick and Nora Charles in a series of films based on yet another Hammet book. But who, in fact, is the Thin Man?
    3. In 1987 the Soviet film “Desyat Negrityat” was released. What is the title of the Agatha Christie novel on which it was based?
    4. This stunner starring a platinum-blonde Rita Hayworth was advertised with the tagline “I told you…you know nothing about wickedness.” What’s the movie?
    5. This Agatha Christie story has been adapted many times, most recently for TV in a version starring Ralph Richardson, Deborah Kerr, Beau Bridges, Wendy Hiller, and Diana Rigg. That’s a helluva cast, but it’s not the one everyone remembers. What’s the title and who most memorably played the male and female leads?

Last week’s quiz, now with an answer!
