Thursday Quiz: Sing a Song of Mayhem

It’s a GUEST QUIZ! Maggie went to the theater the other night (YAWN, so what else is new?) and the Playbill had a quiz about “musicals that involve characters singing and dancing their way to the ultimate crime.” Always delighted to offload Quiz Detail onto someone else, Maggie is pleased to serve up this week’s puzzler, courtesy of a Mr. Andrew Gans, from whom the following is stolen verbatim:

  1. This often-hilarious new Broadway musical at the Walter Kerr Theatre features Bryce Pinkham as a genial murderer and Tony winner Jefferson Mays as eight members of the doomed D’Ysquith family [ahem: not happy with the hyphenation? Neither is Maggie. Yell at Mr. Gans.]
  2. This much-extended musical murder mystery, currently playing Off-Broadway’s New World Stages, features one actor investigating a crime (Brett Ryback and the other playing all the suspects (co-creator Joe Kinosian). And, they both play the piano!
  3. This Stephen Sondheim-Hugh Wheeler masterpiece about a vengeful barber, which debuted on Broadway in 1979, will be seen March 5-8 at Avery Fisher Hall with a cast that boasts Emma Thompson, Bryn Terfel, Christian Borle, and Philip Quast.
  4. This Frank Wildhorn musical about a London doctor and his murderous alter ego was seen on Broadway last season in a revival starring Constantine Maroulis.
  5. The Grim Reaper, disguised as a young prince, experiences the joys and heartbraks of life in this Maury Yeston-Thomas Meehan musical seen Off-Broadway in 2011.
  6. Narcissistic yuppie psychopath Patrick Bateman is at the center of this Duncan Sheik-Robert Aguirre-Sacasa musica, which is based on the Bret Easton Ellis novel of the same name and debuted in London in December 2013.
