Enter a Murderer

Ngaio Marsh was what you might call “known” for her writing – she was named a Grandmaster of the Mystery Writers of America, was made a Dame by the British Crown, and, over the course of 50 years, wrote 32 novels featuring Inspector Roderick Alleyn. On the side, however, she was also a well-respected theatrical producer (having started out as an actress), and her passion for and knowledge of the theater was displayed in many of Alleyn’s adventures, not least in Enter a Murderer. The Inspector has been invited to an opening night, a new play in which two characters quarrel and then struggle for a gun, with predictably sad results. Even sadder, the gun was not, in fact, loaded with blanks.
