The Ted Stratton series, by Laura Wilson, begins during the London Blitz with The Innocent Spy, a remarkable novel that blends spy story, history lesson, and police procedural, and follows Inspector Stratton through the War and post-War years. The series is grounded in meticulous historical research and often takes its inspiration from real cases. As Wilson has written, her intent for the series was to present the "changing nature of England between 1939 and 1975 through the eyes of a London policeman during his working life." The series so far is up to 1959; here's hoping for more encounters with Inspector Stratton.
