Felony of the Week: Shooting in the Dark

Spring is sprung
The grass is riz!
I wonder where
The birdies is.

Many years ago I was dating a clinical depressive (we all make mistakes in our twenties). He surprised me one morning, about this time of year, by waking up and declaiming the lines above. To say that he did not tend to jollity in the AM is to make rather an enormous understatement: His usual MO involved yanking the covers over his head and moaning softly. Peppy doggerel represented a big step up.

In Gotham, at least, the grass is indeed riz, so let’s make this Felony of the Week a salute to spring: For just a handful of change you can take a trip to Amsterdam and smell the tulips. Doesn’t that sound seasonally charming? True, there’s guys with guns hiding in the tulips, but the tulips still smell nice. And the book is a knockout. The Los Angeles Herald called Shooting in the Dark “complicated, witty, and stunningly good.” And this week only, it’s also cheap.
