Sarah Rayne Interview Excerpt: Spooky Houses

Buildings play such a powerful role in many of Sarah Rayne’s books, with a menacing presence that renders them almost alive (an example of this would be Mortmain House in A Dark Dividing). And one of the interesting things about the buildings is that unlike the menacing buildings in Stephen King’s books, for instance, there is no initial presentation of these buildings as ordinary, as anything other than broodingly malevolent. We asked Sarah to talk about why buildings feature so prominently in her writing, and if there had been a building that scared her as a child. See also the first part of our interview.
